A halo is a border of small stones set around the center. On a princess cut engagement ring with a halo, the border follows the square outline, so the center looks larger and its straight sides read crisply. The corners are the most exposed part of a princess cut, and a halo sets metal and accents close around them. Because the accents add light around the edge, a halo also lets a smaller center look fuller on the hand.
Most designs add pave lab-grown diamonds along the band, so the sparkle continues past the halo. Vintage designs bring milgrain edges, filigree and engraving. Split shank designs divide the band as it meets the center, and floral designs shape the halo into petals. A few go further with a double halo, bezel-set accents, a cluster halo or a three stone layout.
White gold, platinum and silver make the halo look bright and match a colorless center. Yellow and rose gold add warmth and contrast with the white accents. Platinum is the densest and hardest-wearing of these metals, and it costs more. Almost every design also takes a fancy blue, green, pink or yellow center, and some are made for black. Settings start under $200, and most are between about $750 and $1,100. That price is for the setting; the center is priced when you choose it.
