Peridot is August's birthstone, known for its yellow-green to olive color. It rates about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, softer than sapphire or diamond, so a halo or bezel that guards its edges is a good choice for a vintage peridot engagement ring worn every day. Clean it with warm, soapy water and a soft brush, and take it off for heavy work.
