Buying guide

Pear shape and yellow color

A pear combines a rounded end with a single point, so it looks long on the finger and points toward the wrist or the fingertip, whichever you prefer. Its large face shows color well, which is why a pear cut yellow diamond ring reads bright and saturated from across a room. The point is the most exposed part of the stone, so look for a setting that protects it: a bezel wraps the edge in metal, and a halo surrounds it with lab-grown diamond accents.

Matching the metal to a yellow center

Yellow gold deepens the color of a fancy yellow pear diamond ring and makes it look warmer. White gold, platinum and silver set the yellow against a cool frame, so the color looks crisper and stands apart from the band. Rose gold gives a softer, mixed tone. Gold settings come in 10K, 14K or 18K.

Popular styles

  • Pave: lab-grown diamond accents along the band, the most common choice here.
  • Solitaire: the yellow pear alone, so all attention stays on the color.
  • Halo: a ring of white accents that makes the center look larger and frames its color.
  • Three stone, bypass and vintage: side stones, a wrapping band, or milgrain and floral detail for a yellow diamond pear engagement ring with more character.

Settings start under $150, and most are between about $700 and $1,200. That price is for the setting only; the center is priced when you choose it.
