Buying guide

Why aquamarine suits a pear shape

Aquamarine is a blue to blue-green beryl and the March birthstone. At 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, it handles daily wear better than many colored gems, though a hard knock can still chip a point. The pear cut's single tip deserves a little care, which is why some designs protect it with a prong or a bezel. Light blue stones show their color best in larger sizes, so many people choose a bigger aquamarine than they would a diamond.

Picking a style

Solitaire designs let the pale blue speak for itself, on plain, bypass or wide flat bands. Halo and double halo designs surround the pear with lab-grown diamonds, which brightens the edge and makes the stone look larger. Pave, channel set and baguette side stone designs add lab-grown diamonds along the band, the look of a pear shaped aquamarine and lab-grown diamond ring. Vintage, floral and twisted bands suit a softer style.

Size, metal and price

Choose the size on the product page: every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. White gold, platinum and silver keep the blue cool and clear; yellow and rose gold add warmth around it. Prices start under $300 at the smallest option, and most rings are between about $750 and $1,050.
