Buying guide
Milgrain is made by rolling a small wheel along the metal to press a line of fine beads into it. It softens the outline of a halo, a bezel or the band, and it catches light along each edge. On an oval, a milgrain frame traces the curve of the stone and gives the center a crisp border. The beads are small, so after many years of daily wear a jeweler can refresh them.
Many designs pair milgrain with a halo of lab-grown diamond accents around the center, which makes the oval look larger. Most also set pave accents along the band. Some are solitaires that keep the focus on the center, with milgrain only on the metal. Smaller groups add engraving, filigree, floral details, bezel-set accents or a three stone layout.
Every design comes in white, yellow and rose gold, platinum and silver. Yellow and rose gold lean warm and suit the old-style look of milgrain; white gold and platinum give it a cooler, brighter edge. Most designs also take a fancy color center in blue, yellow, pink or green, and some take a black center. Settings start under $200, and most cost between about $750 and $1,250. That price is for the setting; the center is priced when you choose it in the next step.
