About tanzanite

Tanzanite is a violet-blue gem found in one small area of Tanzania. Its color shifts between blue and purple as you turn the stone. It is a December birthstone. Tanzanite rates about 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, softer than sapphire or diamond, so it is best kept away from hard knocks and stored apart from harder stones.

Why the marquise cut suits tanzanite

The marquise cut is long and narrow with two points. It shows the gem's color along its length and looks larger than many shapes of the same weight. The points are the most exposed part of the stone, so designs that guard them with prongs, a halo or a bezel are a good choice for tanzanite worn daily.

Styles for a marquise tanzanite engagement ring

  • Solitaire and bypass: the tanzanite alone, on a plain, pave or wrapping band.
  • Halo and double halo: a frame of lab-grown diamond accents around the center.
  • Three stone and side stone: a marquise tanzanite ring with lab-grown diamonds beside the center.
  • Vintage, floral and bezel: milgrain, filigree, petal details or a metal rim around the stone.

White gold, platinum and silver bring out the blue; yellow and rose gold bring out the violet. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Prices start under $300, and most rings are between about $750 and $1,050.
