Buying guide

Why a marquise cut suits lab-grown sapphire

A marquise is a long oval with a point at each end. Its length makes the stone look larger than a round of the same weight, and it makes the finger look longer and slimmer. Lab-grown sapphire rates 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond among gemstones, so it holds up well to daily wear. The two points are the most exposed part of the stone, which is why most designs protect them with V-shaped prongs or a bezel.

Blue, pink or yellow lab-grown sapphire

Every design can be ordered with a lab-grown blue sapphire, the classic choice, or with a lab-grown pink or yellow sapphire for a softer or brighter look. A lab-grown sapphire has the same hardness and makeup as a natural sapphire and costs far less.

Choosing a style

  • Solitaire designs keep the lab-grown sapphire alone on a plain or pave band.
  • Halo and double halo designs frame it with lab-grown diamond accents, the most popular marquise lab-grown sapphire ring look.
  • Three stone and side stone designs add lab-grown diamond side stones in pear, baguette, marquise or round shapes.
  • Vintage, floral, twisted and split shank designs add milgrain, leaf and open band details.

Bands run from about 1.8 to 2.5 mm wide on most designs. Prices start under $300, and most rings are between about $750 and $1,050, depending on metal and style.

Marquise Lab-Grown Sapphire Rings FAQs

Can sapphires be marquise cut?

Yes. Lab-grown sapphire is hard enough, at 9 on the Mohs scale, to be cut into a marquise with fine points at each end, and the long shape shows off its color well. Every ring in this collection sets a marquise cut lab-grown sapphire, in blue, pink or yellow. Because the points are the most exposed part, our designs hold them with prongs or a bezel to protect them in daily wear.
