Buying guide
Most of these rings carry a pavé band of lab-grown diamond accents, and many are edged in milgrain, the fine beading found on antique rings. Some add a halo or hidden halo around the lab-grown emerald, filigree openwork in the gallery, engraved leaf sides or floral shapes. A few are solitaires, and a few use bezel accents, a split shank or a three stone layout.
A lab-grown emerald has the same chemistry and green color as a natural emerald, grown in controlled conditions rather than mined, and costs far less than a natural stone of similar size. A lab-grown emerald is about 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, softer than diamond, so a halo or a prong at each point helps protect the marquise tips in daily wear.
Every ring offers 1 to 9 carats total weight. Yellow and rose gold warm up the green and suit the antique look, while white gold and platinum give a cooler contrast. Prices start under $350 at the smallest size, and most are between about $850 and $1,100 at that size, including the lab-grown emerald.
