Engraving cuts patterns into the metal itself: scrolls, leaves, notches or an XO motif. On most of these settings it runs along the sides of the band, and many pair it with milgrain, the fine beaded edge that gives a ring an antique finish. Nearly every design here has a vintage look. Engraving also shows best in yellow and rose gold, where the grooves catch shadow, while white gold and platinum give a crisper line.
Many designs are solitaires, which keep the attention on the marquise and the carved band. Others add a pavé band of lab-grown diamond accents, a halo around the center, or a stone on each side in a three stone layout. Floral and filigree designs mix engraving with openwork petals and scrolls, and a few use a bezel, cathedral shoulders or a split shank.
Most settings can be ordered for a colorless center or a fancy blue, pink, yellow or green center, and some for black. Settings start under $200, and most are between about $950 and $1,400. That price is for the setting only; the center is priced when you choose it.
