A hidden halo is a row of small lab-grown diamonds set around the base of the center stone, just below where it sits. From the top the lab-grown sapphire looks like a clean solitaire. From the side, the halo shows as a band of sparkle under the stone. It suits anyone who wants a simple top view with a detail that shows up as the hand moves.
Band widths run from about 1.8 to 2.5 mm, and 2 mm is offered on most designs.
Lab-grown sapphire has the same hardness as natural sapphire, 9 on the Mohs scale, so it holds up well to daily wear. Blue looks crisp in white gold or platinum; pink and yellow warm up in rose or yellow gold. Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight, and gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Prices start at about $300, and most rings are between about $700 and $1,000.
