Buying guide
The halo is a ring of small lab-grown diamonds around the center. It makes the lab-grown sapphire look larger and adds sparkle around its color. The pear-shaped side stones point outward from the center, which lengthens the look of the ring on the finger. Three stone rings are often given to stand for past, present and future, and the halo adds a brighter frame to that classic layout.
An oval, pear or marquise center pairs naturally with the pear side stones and looks longer on the hand. A round or cushion center gives a softer, more traditional look, and a princess, emerald or heart center makes a bolder statement. Blue is the classic lab-grown sapphire color, pink reads softer, and yellow gives a warm, bright look against the lab-grown diamonds.
A lab-grown sapphire has the same chemistry, crystal structure and hardness as a natural sapphire. It rates 9 on the Mohs scale, just below diamond, so it stands up well to daily wear on the hand. Lab-grown sapphire costs far less than a natural sapphire of similar size and color, and its color is even from stone to stone.
The ring offers 1 to 9 carats total weight. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Prices start from about $360 at the smallest option, and most versions start at about $800.
