About lab-grown pink sapphire

A lab-grown pink sapphire is corundum, the same mineral as a natural sapphire, grown under controlled conditions. It rates 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, second only to diamond, so it wears well every day. Lab-grown sapphire is the birthstone for September. A lab-grown pink sapphire costs far less than a natural one of similar size and color.

How a lab-grown pink sapphire trilogy ring is built

A trilogy ring, or three stone ring, has one larger center and two side stones. Here the center is the lab-grown pink sapphire and the side stones are lab-grown diamonds, so this is a lab-grown pink sapphire and lab-grown diamond trilogy ring. The side stones change the look:

  • Round side stones: a simple, balanced line of three.
  • Pear side stones: points that lead the eye toward the center and make the ring look wider.
  • Tapered baguettes and trillions: straight, clean edges with a more modern outline.

Some designs add a pave band, pave shoulders, a split shank or a halo around the center.

Metal and price

Rose and yellow gold warm the pink; white gold, platinum and silver keep it bright and cool. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Prices start under $300, and most rings are between about $800 and $1,300.
