Blue topaz is a clear, bright gem with a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, firm enough for a ring worn often with ordinary care. Its even color shows the outline of a heart clearly, from the rounded lobes to the point. Topaz can split along one direction if struck hard, so a setting that guards the point and the edges is worth having on a heart shaped topaz ring.
Most designs offer 1 to 9 carats total weight. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K, and white metals keep the blue cool and icy while yellow and rose gold warm it. Prices start under $300, and most rings are between about $750 and $1,050 at their smallest option.
