What to know about aquamarine

Aquamarine is the pale to light blue variety of beryl and the birthstone for March. It rates 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, so it suits daily wear with some care: take it off for heavy work and clean it with warm, soapy water and a soft brush. A heart shape shows the color best toward its center, and the point is the part to protect. Prongs at the point and on the two lobes hold the shape securely.

Aquamarine heart shaped ring styles

  • Solitaire: one heart-shaped aquamarine on a plain or slim band, some with a bypass or wide flat band.
  • Pave and side stones: lab-grown diamond accents along the band, or baguette and pear side stones next to the center.
  • Halo and double halo: one or two rows of lab-grown diamonds around the heart, which make it look larger.
  • Three stone, vintage and floral: side stones that frame the center, milgrain and filigree details, or petal shapes.

Metals, carat weight and price

Every design comes in white, yellow or rose gold in 10K, 14K or 18K, in platinum, and in silver. White gold, platinum and silver keep the blue cool and clear, while yellow and rose gold add warmth around it. Carat weight is picked on the product page, from 1 to 9 carats total weight. Prices start under $300, and most rings are between about $750 and $1,050 at their smallest option.
