A bezel is a thin wall of metal that runs around the edge of the stone. On an oval it follows the curve and protects the narrow ends, which are the most exposed points on the shape. It sits low, catches less on knits and gloves, and gives a clean outline. A half bezel covers only the two sides and leaves the ends open, so more light reaches the stone while the sides stay protected.
Bezel solitaires keep the look simple, with plain, split or sculpted bands. Halo designs add a ring of lab-grown diamond accents around the bezel for more sparkle and a larger look. About half the designs lean vintage, with milgrain edges, filigree or engraved details. Some add pave shoulders, side stones, or a three stone layout.
White gold makes a colorless center look bright; yellow and rose gold warm the outline and frame a fancy yellow or pink center nicely. Every design comes in 10K, 14K or 18K gold. Prices are for the setting: they start at about $500, and most settings fall between about $1,100 and $1,650. The center is priced when you choose it.
