Buying guide
A three stone ring has a center stone with a smaller stone on each side. Here the garnet sits in the middle and lab-grown diamonds fill the sides, so the deep color of the garnet stands out against white sparkle. Round side stones are the classic look; pear side stones point toward the center and make the ring look longer, and baguettes or trillions give a sharper, geometric line. A few designs add pave shoulders, a split shank or a halo.
Garnet is January's birthstone and rates about 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale. That is fine for a ring worn with some care: take it off for heavy work and clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Every design offers each of the shapes above and 1 to 9 carats total weight.
Choose 10K, 14K or 18K white, yellow or rose gold. Yellow and rose gold warm up a garnet's color; white gold gives a cooler contrast with the side stones. Prices include the garnet and start from about $600; most rings are between about $950 and $1,250 at the smallest carat option.
