Topaz rates 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, so a gold ring with topaz holds up well to daily wear, though a hard knock can chip it along its cleavage. Almost all blue topaz gets its color from treatment of colorless topaz, which is standard for this gem and gives a steady, lasting blue. Clean it with warm, soapy water and a soft brush, and avoid sudden temperature changes.
A solitaire puts all the attention on the topaz and is the easiest to pair with a band. Pave designs add rows of lab-grown diamond accents along the band, and halo designs ring the center with small lab-grown diamonds, which makes the stone look larger and brighter. Three stone, split shank, floral and vintage designs with milgrain or filigree give more detail. A few designs use a bezel, which wraps the stone in metal and protects its edges.
White gold keeps the blue crisp and cool, yellow gold gives warm contrast, and rose gold softens the look. Round and cushion shapes show the most sparkle, while oval, pear and marquise look longer on the finger. Emerald-cut topaz shows off the clarity of the stone in long, open facets. Prices start under $600, and most rings are between about $900 and $1,050.
