Buying guide
In a bypass ring the band does not close into a straight circle under the stone. Its ends slide past each other and hold the center between them, which gives the ring a gentle swirl. The center is natural, treated garnet, a rich wine red that looks warm in yellow and rose gold and sharper in white gold or platinum. Garnet rates about 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, fine for regular wear with a little care.
Round, oval, cushion, pear, princess, emerald, heart and marquise shapes are all available. Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight, and gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Prices start at about $300, and most rings sit between about $800 and $1,050 at the smallest size.
