The emerald cut is a step cut: long, parallel facets that act like windows into the stone. On a red lab-grown ruby, that cut shows depth of color more than sparkle. A lab-grown ruby has the same chemistry as a natural ruby and rates 9 on the Mohs scale, hard enough for a ring worn every day. The cut corners help protect the stone.
Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K; yellow and rose gold warm the red, and platinum or white gold sharpen it. Most bands are about 1.8 to 2.2 mm wide. Prices start under $300, and most rings are between about $750 and $1,050.
