How an emerald cut looks in black

An emerald cut has a rectangular outline, cut corners and long step facets. In a black stone those facets read as flat, mirror-like planes rather than sparkle, so the shape and the metal around it do most of the work. A black diamond ring in an emerald cut looks sharp and architectural, and it suits both plain and accented bands.

Choosing a style

  • Solitaire: a single center on a plain or lightly accented band. The simplest way to show the rectangle.
  • Pave and side stone: the most common choice here, with lab-grown diamond accents along the band. White accents contrast strongly with a black center.
  • Halo and hidden halo: a frame of lab-grown diamond accents around or under the center, adding brightness next to the dark stone.
  • Three stone and vintage: side stones beside the center, or milgrain, filigree and engraved details.

Metal, band width and price

Every design comes in white, yellow and rose gold, platinum and silver. White gold and platinum give a crisp black-and-white look, while yellow and rose gold soften it. Many bands are about 1.8 to 2.2 mm wide. Settings start under $200, and most are between about $750 and $1,150. That price is for the setting only; the center is chosen and priced in the next step.
