In a bypass ring the band does not close in a straight line under the stone. The two ends curve around the center and pass each other, which gives the ring a sense of movement on the finger. The curve frames the blue topaz from the sides, and it works well with elongated shapes such as oval, pear and marquise, which follow the swirl of the band.
Blue topaz is a December birthstone with a clear, bright blue color. It rates 8 on the Mohs scale, so it suits daily wear with normal care. Every design offers 1 to 9 carats total weight. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K, and most bands are about 1.8 to 2.2 mm wide. White gold, platinum and silver suit its crisp blue, while yellow and rose gold give it a warmer contrast.
