Buying guide
Every ring offers round, oval, cushion, princess, emerald, Asscher, radiant, pear, marquise and heart centers. A stone of 9 carats covers much of the finger, so the outline matters. Round and cushion shapes give the most sparkle. Oval, pear and marquise stones are longer and look larger from above for their weight. Emerald and Asscher step cuts show broad, flat facets and a calm, clear look, and they show the stone's clarity more openly than brilliant cuts.
A thin or rounded plain band keeps the 9 carat lab-grown diamond center as the only stone and makes it look larger by contrast. A pavé band lines the shank with small lab-grown diamond accents, which add to the ring's overall carat weight. Some rings add a hidden halo under the center, visible from the side, or a cathedral setting that lifts the stone on arches. Most bands are about 1.8–2.2 mm wide. A narrow band also makes a large center feel balanced rather than heavy.
Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K, in white, yellow or rose. Higher karats are richer in color and softer; 14K is a popular middle ground. Platinum is naturally white, dense and durable, and it holds prongs securely around a large stone. Prices start at about $10,600, and most rings cost between about $18,500 and $18,900 in the lowest-priced metal, center included.
