Buying guide
With a center this large, a solitaire lets one stone carry the ring. There are no side stones to compete with it, and the clean setting makes the shape easy to see. Lab-grown diamonds match mined diamonds in hardness and sparkle, so an 8 carat center wears as well as it looks.
A thin plain band makes the center look even bigger by contrast, while a rounded plain band feels comfortable and solid. A pavé band adds a line of small lab-grown diamonds without taking focus from the center. A hidden halo tucks small stones under the center so they show only from the side, and a cathedral setting raises the center on arches above a graduated pavé band.
Round, oval and cushion shapes give the most sparkle; emerald and Asscher cuts trade sparkle for long, clean flashes; pear, marquise and heart shapes stand out for their outline. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K in white, yellow or rose, and platinum is naturally white. Bands run from about 1.8 to 2.5 mm, with 2.2 mm on every style. Prices start from about $9,000 with the center included, and most rings cost between about $13,900 and $14,200.
