The asscher is a square step cut with cropped corners, so it looks almost octagonal. Its long, flat facets step down toward the center and create a layered, hall-of-mirrors look rather than the scattered sparkle of a round brilliant. Because those broad facets are so open, an asscher shows its clarity and color more plainly than most shapes. At 4 carats the square outline is bold on the hand.
