Buying guide

Why yellow gold with a solitaire

Yellow gold gives a warm frame that makes a white center look brighter by contrast. With a solitaire there is little else on the ring, so the color of the band matters more. 14K is the everyday pick: rich in color and strong. 18K has a deeper yellow and is a little softer, so it shows wear sooner. 10K is the hardest and the lowest in price, with a paler tone.

Band and setting choices

A plain band keeps the classic solitaire outline, and a rounded plain band feels smooth and comfortable. A pavé band adds a line of small lab-grown diamond accents along the shoulders. For a little more height and detail, a cathedral setting lifts the center on arches above a graduated pavé band, and a hidden halo tucks small stones under the center where they show from the side. Accents add to the ring's total.

Shape and price

Round gives the most sparkle. Oval, pear and marquise look longer for their weight, and cushion and radiant suit a softer square look. Prices start from about $2,100 for the finished ring, and most sit between about $2,300 and $2,450 in the lowest metal option.
