Buying guide

How an emerald cut looks

An emerald cut is a rectangular step cut with trimmed corners. Instead of tiny sparkling facets, it has long parallel ones that flash like a hall of mirrors. The open table shows clarity and color plainly, which is why a clean stone matters more here than in a round. At 3 carats the long outline covers a good part of the finger and looks elegant on a simple band.

Picking the band

A thin plain band lets the rectangle stand on its own and makes the center look larger. A rounded band feels softer and more substantial. A pavé band adds a line of small lab-grown diamonds, and a hidden halo tucks more of them under the center for side sparkle. The cathedral design lifts the stone on arches above a graduated pavé band. Accents add to the ring's total; the 3 carat weight is the center alone.

Metal and price

White gold and platinum keep the look icy, while yellow and rose gold warm the edges of the step facets. Platinum is denser and naturally white. Prices start from about $2,100, and most rings are between about $2,300 and $2,450 in 10K gold with the center included.
