Buying guide
An oval is a brilliant cut, so it has lively sparkle similar to a round, but its longer outline covers more of the finger. A 1.5 carat oval measures roughly 9 by 6.5 mm and looks larger from the top than a round of the same weight. Set lengthwise, it also makes the finger look longer and slimmer.
Solitaires come on a thin plain band, a rounded plain band or a pave band. The hidden halo adds small stones under the center, seen from the side, while the vintage-style halo frames the oval and sits on a three-row pave band. Side-stone styles pair the oval with marquise and round accents or pear and round accents, the three stone ring adds a stone on each side, and the cathedral style lifts the center over a graduated pave band. Accents add to the ring's total; the 1.5 carat figure is the center.
Yellow gold gives an oval a warm, classic look, rose gold a soft pink tone, and white gold a bright, cool one. 10K is the most durable and affordable, 14K is the common middle, and 18K shows the richest color. Prices start at about $1,100, and most rings fall between about $1,275 and $1,350 in the lowest-priced metal, center included.
