A cushion cut has a square or slightly rectangular outline with rounded corners and broad facets, which give it big, soft flashes of light. Its rounded corners carry no sharp points, so they are less prone to chipping. At 1.5 carats a cushion center has real presence on the hand, and its outline sits close to the band, which makes it easy to wear with a straight wedding band.
A plain band leaves the cushion on its own and keeps the profile simple. A rounded plain band feels smooth and comfortable all day. A pave band adds a line of small lab-grown diamonds along the top. The hidden halo sets small stones beneath the center, seen only from the side. The cathedral style lifts the cushion on arches over a graduated pave band. Accents add to the ring's total; the 1.5 carat figure is the center.
White gold and platinum keep a colorless center looking crisp, while yellow and rose gold warm it. Platinum is naturally white and heavier. Gold comes in 10K, 14K or 18K. Prices start at about $1,250 and most rings sit near $1,275 in the lowest-priced metal, with the 1.5 carat center included.
