Buying guide
A solitaire puts one main stone at the center of the ring. With a half carat lab-grown diamond, that single stone does all the work, so the shape and the band shape the whole look. Some of these rings add small lab-grown diamonds in the band or under the center, yet the top view still reads as a single stone.
A plain band is the classic choice and pairs easily with a wedding band later. A rounded plain band has a softer edge that feels smooth on the finger. A pave band sets small stones along the top for extra light. The hidden halo hides a ring of small stones under the center, seen from the side, and the cathedral style lifts the center on arches above a graduated pave band.
Platinum is naturally white and costs the most. Gold is offered in 10K, 14K or 18K, in white, yellow or rose. These rings start under $800 in the lowest-priced metal, and most sit around $1,050, with the center included. Any accents add to the ring's overall stone weight, and the 0.5 carat figure refers to the center stone.
